Q: What do the new Food Safety laws say?

A: In New South Wales, every single food business that prepares and serves food (excluding Vulnerable Persons) must have a designated Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) that meets several requirements.

Most Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) are NOT approved by the New South Wales Food Authority and cannot issue a certificate that will satisfy the new requirements. Prime Skills is an NSWFA Registered Training Organisation.The Food Safety Supervisor must:

  • Have the skills and knowledge to be a Food Safety Supervisor
  • Have the ability to supervise
  • Have the authority to supervise
  • Have the required unit of competency from a New South Wales Food Authority (NSWFA) Registered Training Organisation
  • Have notified the NSWFA or their local council AFTER you have received your certificate.

Q: What are the requirements for Registered Training Organisations used to deliver the Food Safety Supervisor Qualifications?

  • Be approved by the NSWFA
  • Fully train and assess the student. ("Recognition of Prior Learning" (RPL) is NOT permitted)
  • Issue a NSWFA prepared certificate
  • Pay the NSWFA a $30 per student certificate fee (this fee is included in all our programs, unless you do not require certification).

A: The required unit of competencies are:

  • For the Hospitality industry:
    • SITXOHS002A: Follow Workplace Hygiene Procedures

    • SIRRFSA001A: Apply retail food safety practices
  • Complete the training and have a certificate.
  • The certificate is current for five years and must be updated within this five year period
  • For classroom or workplace courses, the maximum number of attendees per course is 15.
